Florida Author: Angelina Assanti

Thank-god-I-got-cancer... I'm not a hypochondriac anymore!

In the spotlight this week is Fort Myers, FL author Angelina Assanti, who wrote, “Thank God I Got Cancer…I’m Not a Hypochondriac Anymore!” and is a perfect choice to kick off our October author feature during Breast Cancer Awareness month. Although Mrs. Assanti’s battle wasn’t with breast cancer, her witty and candid approach to dealing with the big “c” has been life changing for the many fans who have read it. And that is why this feature is an extended one in honor of not only the creative genius of our authors but also the strength of all the cancer survivors and warriors out there.

When asked what she would tell others battling cancer, Angelina told SWFL Online News, “You need to know how much your actions influence people. Your family and friends are watching you and it’s more difficult for them than it is for us. Cancer is shocking and feels like the worst thing in the world but keep your sense of humor and take notes. You may just write a book about it that will help other people!”

Angelina is very proud of her book and its benefit to others but she is so much more than just a survivor of cancer. She is a mother, wife, and was an accomplished author well before her medical battle: “The Lottery Heiress” and “Mark Taylor’s Checkered Past”. Her second book; “Mark Taylor’s Checkered Past” came out in 2014. It is about an actor who has to conceal a predatory Hollywood mogul’s crime to keep his acting career going. She was granted access to Betty Ford (Hazelden) and was permitted to interview people there with the caveat that she write a funny story about addiction. The book went on to win a national award and she says is her most pirated book!

Mrs. Assanti takes a very tongue in cheek approach to life and says that with being from Massachusetts and having married someone from South Carolina her jokes write themselves. She says holidays are really about gathering material for her books. “Besides,” she states, “writing is saving me thousands in therapy costs.” Growing up in Massachusetts Angelina was taught to see the humor in everything, and as the youngest child she said and did anything to get a laugh – which she told us resulted in lots of detentions and her own chair in the principal’s office.

Angelina Assanti - AuthorWhen describing her writing Angelina said, “My fiction books are redemptive stories. We all have a life event that triggers changes in us. Some are good changes and some can be bad. But I believe that sometimes we go through difficult things as a means of helping other people. That is certainly true with the cancer book. I was never close to anyone who had cancer. I felt it was important to chronical all the hurtful comments people made as well as the inconsiderate things they did to me as a warning to others. People need to understand what a patient goes through. Plus, I went to the cancer center and they only had educational medical books about cancer. People like me need to laugh. I didn’t want to look at a bunch of books with diagrams I didn’t understand. Now making fun of people that I can relate to! I have had so many readers tell me that they feel like I am sitting in the room with them, telling them the stories. I have been told I have a casual narration.”

It’s no surprise that Angelina’s favorite reads are of funny man and author Dave Barry and humorous non-fiction. But what may surprise you is she is really a Hallmark type of person. Although she admittedly tries to find the humor in everything, she is not immune to the social strife and societal state that we face. She told us she finds it difficult to read anything in pop-culture due to how trashy things are becoming and how destructive social media can be. “It’s such a façade. We have disconnected from reality and voice our frustrations by banging on our keyboards and calling each other idiots. I wish people would realize that there is more that unites us than divides us and stop buying into futile arguments. “

Mrs. Assanti is an amazingly determined and strong woman with an outlook that is cautiously optimistic and has a humor that is infectious! The way she weaves tales of redemption into stories that focus on the life events we can all relate to delivers a message of hopefulness that is served with side of laughter. Readers undoubtedly will find themselves smiling more when they’ve finished one of her books.
